Lip Enhancement: Everything You Need to Know

August 2, 2018

What is Lip Enhancement?

Lip Enhancement is when your lip is fuller, you have fewer wrinkles, and you have a more defined pout. As a plastic surgeon, the biggest difference is whether you want the red portion of your lips rejuvenated and more plump, or if you want to get rid of the fine wrinkles above your upper lip and on your lips.

Lip enhancement to give you a fuller, more structured pout, is usually done with a thicker HA filler such as Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Vollure, Restylane Refyne, or Restylane Defyne.

Lip enhancement for getting rid of the tiny wrinkles of the skin above your upper lip, or the tiny wrinkles in the red portion of your lips, requires a different kind of HA filler. These HA fillers are softer so that they will fill in a tiny wrinkle yet leave no visible lump or bump. Typically I use Juvederm Volbella or Restylane Silk for these wrinkles.

What is the “Best” Dermal Filler for Lip Enhancement?

In my opinion, there is no “best” dermal filler for the lips. As aforementioned, I will use different dermal fillers for the lips themselves versus the tiny wrinkles above the upper lip and inside the red parts of the lips depending on thickness of the product.

However, when it comes to regular lip enhancement, there is no “best product” but rather the best product for your desired outcome. For someone who may just want structure to the lip, a slight enhancement, or wants to start off slow, Juvederm Vollure would be best as it is a thinner product and is sold in half syringes (0.5ccs). For someone who desires large, full, luscious lips, I would recommend Restylane Defyne because its a thicker product, sold in one syringe, and provides a lot of oomph.

It’s important to discuss your aesthetic goals with your injector prior to injections so that you can find which product will deliver the best results for you. TO find out how many syringes you should get, head here.

How Long Will Your Results Last After a Lip Enhancement?

How long your results last depends on the crosslinking and thickness of the dermal filler.  Basically, the thicker the HA filler, the longer it will last.

However, we also know that areas of the face with more muscle movement will absorb your dermal filler faster. Since the lips move so much compared to your cheeks or the areas under your eyes, any HA filler will last a little shorter if used in the lips.

HA fillers used in the red portion of the lips that provide more structure will last about 10-12 months.

HA fillers used in the tiny wrinkles above the upper lip and to enhance the tiny wrinkles in the red part of the lips will last a shorter period of time, usually about 6 months.

How Do I Make a Consultation?

Call my office at (415) 362-1846 or email info@drkim.com, and my Patient Care Coordinator will get you started!

Consultations typically take 30-45 minutes, and I do the entire consultation personally, without the use of a nurse or helper to vet your questions and concerns without me present.

If you are uncertain if you are a candidate for a lip enhancement, ask for my Patient Care Coordinator at info@drkim.com and send in your photos of your lips. I can look at your photos and help you determine if you are a good candidate before coming to my office. There is no charge for this service.
