In an effort to provide patients with even better results,San Francisco plastic surgeon, Dr. Roy Kim, plans to begin offering fat transfer with his San Francisco face lift procedures to create a truly rejuvenating cosmetic procedure. By incorporating the two techniques into one procedure, he intends to attain even greater results than are possible with a traditional facelift. San Francisco patients will soon benefit from more youthful looking faces after a visit to his clinic.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons indicates that more and more surgeons, like Dr. Kim, are opting to use soft tissue fillers over botulinum toxin type A for the treatment of aging. For instance, from 2008 to 2009, the use of soft tissue fillers increased 7 percent, while the use of botulinum toxin type A decreased by 4 percent.

You cannot simply pull the skin tight and expect it to look great. There will still be wrinkles and areas that need to be filled out to create a fully youthful appearance

When asked about the combined procedure, Dr. Kim explained, “As the skin ages, patients lose facial volume. This, combined with the effects of the sun and gravity on the skin itself, creates wrinkles, bags, sagging skin and deep lines. A face lift works well to reduce the appearance of sagging skin and facial creases, but this falls short of a full facial rejuvenation.”

“You cannot simply pull the skin tight and expect it to look great. There will still be wrinkles and areas that need to be filled out to create a fully youthful appearance,” he continued. “By combining the fat transfer with a facelift, San Francisco patients can improve the look of wrinkles and add fullness to their faces at the same time.”

The goal of the new procedures is to make the face look more youthful by adding volume where it has been lost as the patient aged. It uses the patient’s own fat tissue, often harvested from the hip area, instead of a synthetic filler. When asked about the benefit of this, Dr. Kim said, “Synthetic fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, do not achieve permanent results. The effect of these injections fades with time, so patients must return for future treatments. By using the patient’s own tissue, the results can be permanent.”

The fat actually takes on the blood supply, which can limit the amount of swelling and bruising the patient experiences, and also help healing to occur faster. This, combined with the better, longer lasting results, leads Dr. Kim to believe that fat transfer with a face lift will soon become the standard for San Francisco face lift patients.
