Plastic Surgery Liposuction Procedures

The need to maintain your weight after liposuction

Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen are vital to keep your new shape after liposuction. Dr. Roy Kim has noted that some of his patients are disappointed with the results of their liposuction surgery 6 or 12 months after surgery. When Dr. Kim weighs them, he is often surprised that the patient has GAINED weight, despite having liposuction!

Dr. Kim cannot control a patients calorie intake, and he hopes that these suggestions will help you to maintain your weight after surgery. A general, helpful tool is knowing about your body mass index (BMI). To calculate your BMI, click here.

With this information, you can ensure that you are NOT obese, and thus a good candidate for liposuction surgery. Dr. Kim, as well as most plastic surgeons, would like patients to have a BMI of around 35 or less. This is highly variable, and even patients with a lower BMI may not be candidates for surgery. Only a consultation and a physical examination with Dr. Kim can determine the best candidates.

If a patient does not gain weight after liposuction, then fat does not accumulate in other areas of the body. However, if a patient gains a significant amount of weight (say more than 10 pounds) after liposuction, then the fat accumulates in the same problem areas that you had before liposuction. Therefore, to get the best results after liposuction, maintaining a proper exercise and healthy diet plan is crucial.

Maintaining a lean body mass after liposuction avoids other health-related risks and helps in tightening of skin after liposuction surgery. No special, unique diet is required just eat a balanced diet. Focus on fruits. Eat a variety of fruits of your choice whether fresh, frozen, canned, or dried rather than fruit juice .

Vary your veggies. Eat more dark green veggies, such as broccoli, kale, and other dark leafy greens; orange veggies, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and winter squash; and beans and peas. Get your calcium-rich foods. Get 3 cups of low-fat or fat-free milk or an equivalent amount of low-fat yogurt and/or low-fat cheese every day.

Make half your grains whole. Eat at least 3 ounces of whole-grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice, or pasta every day. Limit saturated fats. The fat you lose through liposuction should stay off permanently by eating a diet with a low glycemic index.

Go lean with protein. Choose lean meats and poultry. Bake it, broil it, or grill it. Different protein sources like fish, beans, peas, nuts, and seeds must be tried.

Exercise - Guidelines include getting 30 minutes of aerobic activity a day and lifting weights to increase your muscle mass. 30 minutes a day sounds like a lot, but is attainable in small doses throughout the day. Park your car far away from the entrance to your workplace, and walk a little further.

Spend just 10 minutes a day at lunch walking, instead of just eating. Take the stairs instead of the elevator inside your office building or when shopping. Take a quick walk after dinner in the evening. Before you know it, youll easily meet 30 minutes of walking a day, on top of your exercise regimen.
