Eyelid Surgery – San Francisco
“Freshen up” your eyes
In 2005, more than 230,000 people in the United States underwent
cosmetic eye surgery. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, has become one
of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery to give more youthful
look to the eyes and rejuvenate the aging eyelids.
Drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes which can give you
an old and tired look can be corrected through eyelid surgery. Eyelid
lift is frequently combined with a face lift or forehead lift as part
of an overall facial rejuvenation procedure. Eyelid surgery can add an
upper eyelid crease to Asian eyes, without erasing evidence of your
ethnic or racial heritage.
The Best Candidates for Eyelid Surgery
The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who are
physically healthy. If droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family, you
may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age.
About Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid lift surgery is done on an
outpatient basis. For the upper eyelid, I make incisions under local
anesthesia following the natural lines of your eyelids and extend
slightly beyond the outside corner into the laugh lines or other
existing creases.
Generally, an incision is hidden within the natural fold of
the upper eyelid. Excess skin and fatty tissue are removed through this
incision. Since the incision follows the natural contour of the upper
eyelid, it will be well concealed when healed.
For lower eyelid surgery, often an incision is hidden just
below the lower lashes. Through this incision, excess skin, muscle, and
fat are removed, or fat may be redistributed to eliminate puffiness or
bulges. The incision is well camouflaged by natural creases.
Eyelid surgeries generally take about one to three hours to complete.
Post operative measures
Straining, bending and lifting should be avoided during the early
postoperative period. You will be able to resume your normal activities
within ten days or less. After surgery, your eyes are lubricated with
ointment to reduce dryness in this area. Cold compresses are
recommended to reduce swelling and bruising. Sutures may be removed 2
to 7 days after surgery.
Most patients can return to work in about 5 to 10 days and may resume wearing contact lenses the next day after surgery.
Risks involved
Complications are infrequent, but may include infection, reaction to anesthesia, and asymmetrical healing or scarring.
Appearance after Eyelid Surgery
Scars may remain slightly pink for six months or more after surgery and eventually fade to a very thin, virtually invisible white line. Eyelid surgery generally yields a substantial and lasting improvement.
