In the United States alone, over 300,000 women undergo breast augmentation every year. Breast implants are most commonly used as aesthetic enhancement on an individual who wishes to have a fuller figure, or to attain a more youthful figure. Using breast implants to remodel the size and shape of the breast significantly improves the self confidence of many women. The Breast Augmentation ProcedureCurrently, the most common way to increase breast size is via breast implants. A breast implant is a silicone elastomer envelope that is filled with saline or silicone. The breast implant is carefully placed under the breast tissue. The proportion of the breast to body height and weight is taken into consideration, as is the chest width, location of nipple / areola complex, distance from the nipple to the breast fold / infra-mammary fold, and desired cleavage after surgery. While the patient is under anesthesia, the plastic surgeon makes an incision, creates a pocket for the implant, positions the implant, and then closes the skin where the incision was made. The breast augmentation patient goes home in a special compression bra. This bra helps to reduce swelling and hold the breasts in the correct position. Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?Women who wish to have breast implants for cosmetic purposes must be at least 18. Patients are usually dissatisfied with small, sagging, or asymmetrical breasts. Candidates should be in good health and not currently pregnant or breast-feeding. Silicone breast implants can only be used in certain cases. Generally, these include correction of breast sag, correction of breast asymmetry, replacing old silicone implants, correcting breast or chest wall defects, or in breast cancer reconstruction. Please contact Dr. Roy Kim's office to see if you qualify for silicone breast implants. Breast Augmentation RecoverySome pain, bruising and swelling is experienced after surgery. During the initial days slight bleeding usually occurs along with the scaring resulting from incision. Heavy exercise should be avoided for several weeks based on the doctor's recommendation. Usually, a person can return to work in 5 to 7 days after surgery. The On-Q pain relief system can markedly reduce the amount of pain you feel. Risks Involved with Breast AugmentationCommon potential risks include those pertaining to the implants, and those related to surgery in general. Related to the implants, there is a risk of rupture or leakage. Those risks are extremely low, but they do exist. The implants carry a 10 year warranty from the manufacturer. This warranty includes direct payment for some surgical costs, as well as a free new implant. Another potential risk is capsular contracture. When an implant is inserted, a layer of tissue forms around the implant, referred to as a capsule. If this capsule contracts it can put pressure on the implant, causing the breast to feel hard. Dr. Roy Kim uses a special technique during the surgery to reduce the risk of capsular contracture. Also, there are several non-surgical treatments available after surgery to hopefully ensure that capsular contracture will not occur. The other possible complication includes rippling, or wrinkling. Despite Dr. Kim's best efforts, the patient may still feel the breast implant edge. This occurs more frequently in a woman with very thin skin who wishes to have a relatively large implant placed above the muscle. Some other risks include loss of sensation of the nipple or breast tissue, calcium deposits, breast implant position shift, and blood clot formation. General complications would include bleeding, infection, and stiffness of the surrounding tissue. The risks of bleeding and infection and stiffness for several months after surgery exist, but incidences are rare. Learn more about Breast Augmentation:
